  • Order of ventricular contraction:
    1. structures next to bundle of His get depolarised and go on to contract before everything else - one of these structures are the papillary muscles which give rise to the caudate tendinea and early contraction of the papillary muscles stabilise the atrioventricular valves, preventing backflow of blood
    2. then the apex of the heart contracts
    3. then the base of the heart contracts
    4. this sequence of contraction + the spiral orientation of muscle fibres -> wringing action -> efficient emptying
