  • MICE stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Expositions, which are part of the tourism industry and involve the public assembling for celebration, education, marketing, and reunion
  • Types of MICE activities:
    • Meeting: gathering of people to discuss a set agenda or do a particular activity
    • Incentive: tool to encourage employees to increase sales or provide solutions
    • Convention: large, national, or international meeting held to commemorate a milestone for the host organization
    • Exhibition: showcases new products, services, information, or promotional materials mounted for public relations, sales, and/or marketing
  • Characteristics of events:
    • Size and volume of output
    • Complexity and variety of services or products offered to the consumer
    • Uncertainty of numbers attending, cost, time schedule, and technical requirements
    • Interaction with customer and the degree of customer contact
  • Types of events:
    • Corporate event: initiated by a company or organization for celebration, recognition, team building, empowerment, training, or recruitment
    • Social event: revolves around different life stages of people for celebration, commemoration, or relationship-building
    • Religious event: focuses on devotion, spiritual reconnection, or worship
    • Special event: aims to entertain, raise funds, or commemorate milestones as a community or locality
    • Festivals and concerts: create an exciting, fun, and memorable experience for the target audience
    • Merchandising event: presents or introduces new products to increase brand reach
    • Mega event: developed through competitive bidding, targeting large audiences internationally
    • Scholastic event: aims to educate, inform, discuss relevant issues, and exchange ideas among an expert or experienced speaker and a smaller audience

  • Congress – It refers to the regular gathering of people who belong to religious, cultural, or professional
    associations.
  • Conference – This is a scholarly gathering to exchange views and, consequently, to convey a message, pen a debate, or give publicity to some opinions on specific issues such as climate change and tourism ustainability.
  • Consumer Show – This is a showcase of products that are offered to the public, mostly for direct sales or promotion to end users.
  • Trade Show – This refers to commerce on a bigger scale. It brings industry players together, targeting similar markets. It is intended to provide a venue for sales leads, contacts with influencers and suppliers, gathering competitor intelligence, networking, and building an image to the customer.
  • Workshops and masterclasses – These are events where the expert goes beyond discussion and lets the attendees have a hands-on, applied experience.
  • Symposiums and colloquiums – These are events that cater to an audience not larger than a convention but not smaller than a workshop, with approximately 50 to 200 persons, where they talk about common topics related to their field.
  • Webinar – This is a portmanteau ([port-'man-tow]; a word or morpheme whose form and meaning are derived from a blending of two [2] or more distinct forms) of the words “Web” and “seminar” (a one-day meeting of a group of people with a teacher or expert for training, discussion, or study on a particular subject). It is an online event that can be streamed and hosted anywhere in the world.
  • VIP event – This event focuses on providing the most influential shareholders, customers, and other honored guests with an exclusive, relaxing experience, as acknowledgment and appreciation for their leadership or contribution. Yacht party, incentive trip, and leadership summit are examples of this type.
