    verb cages- animalistic allusions links w darwinism. this critiques the suppression of these hedonistic urges and religious dogma- zoomorphism description of HJs degenerate desires shows societal constraints compel him to suppress these desires, leading to beastly animalistic force personified through hyde. his transmogrification into hyde was bc he was forced to resort to secrecy - this is an oxymoron as dishonest is incompatible with the blueprint of respectable gentleman

  • “he was austere with himself drank gin when he was alone to mortify a taste for vintage “ utterson chap1 - adjective austere he is indulging in gin bc he doesn’t want to indulge in more expensive alcohol repressing his true desires gin was associated w the lower class that’s why he only drinks it alone to avoid tarnishing his reputation. - choice of gin- gin has more alcohol then whine drunkenness is associates with withdrawing you inhibitions suggests that he needs this respite from the austerity he faces w the public sphere.

Landon embodies rationalism which separates him from HJs morbid curiosity and exploration into the uncharted territories of repressed desires - Lanyons mythological allusion ridiculed him revealing that his belief extend beyond the scientific realm. stevenson may be offering a critique of how science heavily influenced by religion can become distorted and inherently flawed
