Advent of English

• English language first arrived in the southern part of Nigeria (specifically in the Benin & Calabar area) as early as 1550
• In 1845, English was not the first European language in Nigeria, it was Portuguese
• The initial form of English in Nigeria was in the shape of Simplified Pidgin
• Scholars mention that the advent of English in Nigeria can be traced back to 3 eras:

  • Before Missionary
  • During
  • After the amalgamation
• Between 1450-1850, there was a boom in Slave Trade, with slaves usually transported along the Sea Shores
