Hooke’s Law

Cards (20)

  • Applying force to an object can cause it to compress stretch bend
  • Deformed is when an object change shape
  • Elastic deformation is when the object will go back to its original shape after applying force
  • In elastic deformation or plastic declamation is when an object doesn’t return to its original shape or stay deformed
  • Extension is the increase in length of a spring when it’s stretched
  • When the spring is in a practical measuring the length of extension, there is a solid support an equal but opposite force, so the spring won’t fall down. Because it is balanced force
  • there would be an extension without extra weight because of its own mass exerting force downwards on the spring
  • As the increased force on spring, the extension increases proportionally
  • The amount of extension for the same force depends on the object, spring constant
  • The spring constant tells us how much newtons needed to stretch the object by 1 m
  • The higher the spring constant, the stiffer the material, taking and requiring more force to stretch
  • k is spring constant
  • E is extension
  • F is force or weight
  • Elasticity is the ability of a substance to regain its original size and shape after being deformed
  • In the graph, when the line is straight and passes through the origin, it shows how force and extension are proportional, positive correlation, it shows the Hooke’s law
  • The straight line shows elastic deformation
  • The curve line shows the elastic limit
  • Elastic limit cancels out hooke’s law and object won’t go back to its original shape anymore
  • Plastic deformation happens if we exceed the elastic limit
