Custodial sentences

• Prison

  • Offenders normally serve half their sentence in prison, and rest on licence in the community
  • If they break the conditions of their licence, they can be sent back to prison
• Life sentence

  • Given to those found guilty of murder
  • The judge sets a minimum term before the parole board can consider release
• Extended sentence

  • A person can be released on licence for up to 8 years
• Suspended sentence

  • Sentenced u to 2 years but carries out a court order. For example unpaid work or receives treatment for drug or alcohol to stay out of prison
