are pure substances that are made of only one type of atom Ex. Oxygen atom (made of ONLY oxygen atoms)
Compounds
are pure substances that contain two or more different types of atoms Ex. Water (made of hydrogen AND oxygen atoms)
Mixture
contains more than one kind of atom or molecule
Homogenous Mixtures
mixtures that have one phase (one layer) because the particles mix evenly with one another Ex. Apple juice (mixture of sugars, colours, vitamins)
Heterogenous Mixtures
mixtures that have more than one phase (more than one layer) because the particles don’t mix very well with one another Ex. Water and oil (can see separate layers)
