types of conformity

Cards (3)

  • What is internalisation?
Internalisation is the deepest form of conformity. The person conforms privately and publicly as they have accepted and internalised the views of the group. The group doesn't need to be present: it becomes part of the individuals own behaviour and beliefs.
  • What is identification?
When people perform publicly as well as privately as they have identified with the group and have a sense of group membership. The change in beliefs or behaviour is often temporary and does not remain when the person is no longer part of the group.
  • What is compliance?
The shallowest level of conformity. When someone conforms publicly but disagrees privately, usually due to desire to fit in.
