How is crude oil separated

Cards (6)

  • 1)Crude oil?
Is first vapourised in a furnace
  • 2) Mixture of?
Liquid and vapour passes into a tower that is cooler at the top than the bottoms
  • 3) Vapor pass?
Up the tower via a series of trays containing bubble caps until it arrives at a tray that is cool, they then condense to liquid
  • 4) Mixture of liquids?
    That condenses is piped off
  • 5) Heavy fractions?
Have a higher boiling point and condense near the bottom of the column
  • 6) Lighter hydrocarbons?
Condense in trays nearer to the top of the tower where it is cooler because they have lower boiling points
