    reality of conflict = Verb = Rips = fragility of the looter and how easy it was to kill him. Consequently, these memories rip through the soldiers mind torturing him
  • "Sort of inside out"

    reality of conflict = The horror has made the soldier unable to describe what happened. Inarticulate and unable to handle the memories. Colloquial Language = Sort of = sparing us of the horrific image
  • "blood-shadow stays on the street"

    Think back to memories = Metaphor = The shadow is not physically there but it is imprinted in his mind
  • "the drinks and drugs wont flush him out"

    effects of conflict = The nightmares and haunting memories cannot be eradicated. Nothing can cure the unwanted memories and flashbacks. Mentally trapped
  • "dug in behind enemy lines"

    Referring to looters hiding place. It is embedded in his mind. Though returning home, part of his conscience was left at the shooting. Home on leave he uses military language contrasting the colloquial language. He is unable to detach himself from war.
  • "His bloody life in my bloody hands"

    PTSD = Blood = Tormented by the never ending nightmare. He no longer blames others for what he did.
  • Structure = Mid action 'On another occasion' when the reader is throw into the story it shows us how he soldiers feel and the chaos of the situation, we don't have all the information and struggle to understand what is going on.
