Specialised plant cells

Cards (12)

  • specialised cells
cells that have special adaptations which help them carry out a particular function
  • what is the process that when a cell is specialised scientist call?
    differentaition
  • What is the main function of the palisade cell?

carries out photosynthesis to make plant food
  • How is palisade cells adapted ?
    • packed with chloroplast to absorb sunlight
  • What would have if the palisade cell doesnt work ?
    leaves would turn yellowish/reddish
  • What is the main function of the root hair cell?
it can absorb water and dissolved minerals
  • How has the root cell adapted?
    • the hairs increase surface area
    • they do not contain chloroplast as they are underground
  • What is the main function of xylem tubes ?
they carry water and dissolved minerals from the roots to the leaves
  • How are xylem tubes adapted ?
    • they are long tubes
    • have VERY thick walls containing lignin (to support the plant )
    • but since they are sealed with lignin this causes it to die
    • the end walls between the cells have broken down so now it forms a long tube so water can flow freely
    • no nucleus, cytoplasm, vacuole or chloroplast
  • What is the main function of phloem?
carry dissolved sugars up and down the plant
  • What is a phloem vessel cell and sieve tubes ?
    • has no nucleus and only LIMITED cytoplasm
    • the end walls of vessel cells have pores (sieve tubes )
    • allow dissolved sugars to move through the cell interior
  • What is a companion cells ?
its the companion by the pores and the mitochondria provides energy to the phloem cell
