AO3: Cognitive interview

Cards (3)

  • Research to support: Kohnken

Meta analysis of 55 studies comparing cognitive interview and standard police interview.
    1. Found CI produced more accurate and more inaccurate details.
    2. Recall was enhanced when witnesses were personally involved.
    3. Amount of correct information seemed to decline when length of time between event and interview increased.
    4. No age differences found.
  • Research to support: Milne and Bull

Found that RE and CR were the key techniques in gaining accurate, detailed recall.
It suggests that modified versions of the CI should concentrate on these features.
  • Weaknesses
CI isn't often used by police as it is too time consuming and you need training to be able to do it.
Cannot tell how effective it is when police use it as they all use it differently; difficult to tell how good it is in the field.
    Not used with trivial crime.
