lung volumes

Cards (9)

  • Tidal volume is the volume of air that is inhaled in and exhaled out with each breath when there is a normal rhythmic breathing at rest
  • Inspiratory reserve volume is the maximum additional volume of air that can be inhaled in after a normal tidal inspiration
  • expiratory reserve volume is the maximum additional volume of air that can be exhaled out after a normal tidal expiration
  • vital capacity is the maximum volume of air exchanged after a forced inspiration followed immediately by a forced expiration
  • residual volume is the volume of air that remains in the lungs at all times and cannot be expelled even after forced expiration
  • total lung capacity is the total volume of air that the lungs can hold
  • vital capacity= TV+IRV+ERV
  • Total lung capacity= VC+RV
  • ventilation rate= tidal volume x number of breaths per minute
