Habituation
is a
decrease
in responsiveness and
eventual
loss
of
response
to a stimulus due to
repeated
or
prolonged
exposure to the stimulus.
The key to
habituation
is that the
stimulus
becomes “neutral” (no longer
biologically
relevant) and can be
generalised
(apply to
similar
stimuli).
Habituation
is particularly
important
in
prey
animals as they are likely to be
neophobic.
