Hybrid culture

Cards (5)

  • Definition
A hybrid is a mix or blend, so hybrid culture is a mixing of two cultures-creating a new culture
  • Causes
    2 causes:
•2nd/3rd gen immigrants grow up blending the culture of their family's background with the culture of the society around them.
•British people adopt the lifestyle, fashion or language of other cultures.
•Antony Giddens (1999) refers to this as reverse colonisation, which is when a powerful culture is changed by the cultures of the countries it once dominated.
  • Effects
Embrace it as part of living in a more diverse and interconnected world.
Others worry that hybrid culture is diluting the more authentic cultures it is blending together. These people engage in cultural defence: they promote their own local culture in (what they imagine to be) its 'pure' form and resist 'foreign' influences.
  • Tikka Masala
Pakistani chefs came up with the dish to please British customers, so it's a case of British culture influencing Asian culture
  • Research- Back /Nayak
Les Back studied two London estates in the 1990s and found young people had developed a Hybrid Culture. It wasn't just the children of Caribbean immigrants
who had mixed their islands' culture with the British culture; the White British youths had adopted Black fashion, language and style (such as a love of Hip-Hop music). Back calls this "playing with different cultural masks." Anoop Nayak describes white youths adopting Black American hairstyles (dreadlocks), music (Rap) and language ("Yo"); he terms them "White Wannabes"
