1933 Elections

Cards (5)

  • The PSOE's share of the vote dropped dramatically. First, its record of unsuccessful reform wand its willingness to use force against working people meant there was little popular enthusiasm for the party. Second, the party decided to contest the 1933 elections without seeking alliances with other parties. Consequently, the PSOE's representation in the Cortes was halved, dropping to 58 deputies.
  • The Republican Action Party, Azana's party, was reduced to only 7 Cortes deputies.
  • Lerroux's Radical Republicans gained 104 seats.
  • CEDA gained 115 deputies and became the biggest party within the Cortes.
  • Alcala-Zamora, the president, refused to appoint Gil-Robles as PM as he believed Gil-Robles was determined to undermine democracy and establish an authoritarian regime. Instead, he asked Lerroux to form a new government. The government consisted primarily of the Radical Republicans with support in the Cortes from CEDA. Their key aim was to reverse the reforms introduced under Azana.
