  • When you preserve food such as vegetables, eggs, meat, and fish it will help you reduce the family's Expenditures.
  • Food Preservation can also be a venue for your creative skills and abilities.
  • Freezing – food is subjected to low temperature to control microbial growth, thus, preventing the food from spoiling.
  • Drying – a method used to draw out water from food. It is the Oldest, Simplest, and Economical way of preserving food.
  • Use of Preservatives – slow down or prevent the growth of bacteria in food and ensure that the food retains its original quality.
  • Freeze Drying – in this method, the product is frozen first then subjected to a strong vacuum which rapidly converts ice into vapor.
  • Sterilization – cooked then placed in glass jars which are sterilized in order to have a longer shelf life.
  • Smoking – salt is placed on the food first, then it will be exposed to smoke coming from slow burning sawdust.
  • Creosote – CHEMICAL COMPOUND
  • Canning – the most common way of preserving food. Canned milk, juices, tomato sauce, processed meats such as sausage.
  • Methods of canning – Open-Kettle Method, Cold-Pack Method, Hot-Pack Method, Fermentation
  • Open-kettle method – cooked until tender and sterilized.
  • Cold-pack method – raw or cold food is placed in sterilized jars and then filled up with hot syrup or liquid.
  • Hot-pack method – food is either blanched or cooked, when sterilized jar is still hot, the food is still placed inside.
  • Fermentation – either dry or salt solution is added to the vegetables. Water is drawn out of the vegetables by OSMOSIS

  • Handicraft Industry
    – refers to creation of objects thru the use of hands
  • Abaca – grows abundantly in the Bicol region, Leyte, and some parts of mindanao. Fibers are used in making Slippers, place mats, bags, ropes, baskets, and other useful articles.
  • Agas – grows in some parts of Bicol, Laguna, Visayas. Used in making Fans, Sandals, Baskets, or bags.
  • Bamboo – grows abundantly all over the country. It is used in making baskets, furniture, houses, and other craft materials.
  • Buri plant – its leaves and midribs are used in making Hats, Baskets, Mats, Trays, and the like.
  • Coconut – grows abundantly in all parts of the country. Called the Tree of Life because it is very useful.
  • Maguey – grows in the Ilocos, Visayas, and some parts of pangasinan, it is used in making ropes, slippers, and other handicrafts.
  • Nipa plant – found in swampy places. Used in making fans, raincoat, and also for roofing.
  • Pineapple fiber – its leaf fiber is woven into fabrics for Barong.
  • Pine tree – grows abundantly in COLD places, Used in making baskets and decorative articles.
  • Rattan – grows in almost all provinces, it is used in making furniture, picture frames, and house decors.
  • General Industry – consists of wood works, metal works, electrical works, clay or ceramics, graphic art and others.
