C3.11 - Nanoparticles

Cards (8)

  • Nanoscience is the study of small particles that are between 1 and 100 nanometres in size
  • Nanoparticles are too small to see with a light microscope
  • 1 nanometre = 0.000 000 001m (1 x 10-9m)
  • Nanoparticles have a high surface to volume ratio because a high percentage of their atoms exposed at their surface
  • Nanoparticle may result in smaller quantities of materials, such as catalysts, being needed for industrial processes
  • SA=(100x100)x6 = 60,000cm2
    V=(100x100x100) = 1,000,000cm3
    SA:V ratio
    = 60,000:1000000
    = 0.06/cm
  • SA: (1x1) x 6 = 6cm2
    V: (1x1x1) = 1cm3
    SA:V ratio
    = 6cm:1cm
    = 6/cm
  • In reactions, nanoparticles are able to react more quickly. This is because more atoms in a nanoparticle can be in contact with the reactant, than in a larger particle
