Human Endocrine System

Cards (9)

  • The human endocrine system is composed of glands that secrete different types of hormones into the bloodstream.
  • The pituitary gland, also known as the 'master gland', is located at the base of the brain and produces FSH and LH.
  • The pancreas produces insulin, which is a hormone that helps regulate the blood glucose level.
  • The thyroid, located in the neck, produces thyroxine which is a hormone that helps control the metabolic rate and affects growth.
  • The adrenal gland, located on top of both kidneys, produces adrenaline and cortisol.
  • The ovaries in females produce oestrogen and progesterone.
  • The testes in males produce testosterone.
  • The blood carries the hormone around the body, and when it reaches a target cell/organ it produces an effect.
  • Compared to the nervous system the effects of the hormones are slower but they act for longer.
