The human endocrine system is composed of
glands
that
secrete different types of hormones
into the bloodstream.
The
pituitary gland
, also known as the
'master gland'
, is located at the
base
of the
brain
and produces
FSH
and
LH.
The
pancreas
produces
insulin
, which is a
hormone
that helps regulate the
blood glucose level.
The
thyroid
, located in the
neck
, produces
thyroxine
which is a hormone that helps control
the metabolic rate
and
affects growth.
The
adrenal gland
, located on
top of both kidneys
, produces
adrenaline
and
cortisol.
The
ovaries
in females produce
oestrogen
and
progesterone.
The
testes
in males produce
testosterone.
The
blood
carries the
hormone
around the
body
, and when it reaches a
target cell
/
organ
it produces an
effect.
Compared to the nervous system the effects of the hormones are
slower
but they act for
longer.
