Norman Aristocracy

• Norman aristocratic culture in England demonstrated wealth, power and superiority over the English

  Primarily done through buildings
• Within 50 years of 1066, every English cathedral, every church and most of the abbeys had been knocked down and rebuilt in the Norman style

  Norman style looked fancy as there was a large amount of money put into building them
• Male aristocrats shaved the back of their heads because spending money on appearance was a luxury that the commoners could not afford
• Aristocrats believe in chivalry, idolising the knights and creating a set of moral guidelines
• Aristocrats had no intention of learning English to read, write or speak it

  The English language nearly completely disappeared with Latin replacing it in written documents.

  Peasants kept the English language alive
