    • cape gudufui is also referred as the Horn of Africa
  • Geographical areas in Africa:
    • Seychelles is the largest archipelago in Africa
    • Madagascar is the largest island in Africa
    • Africa has four capes: Cape Blaco/ras Ben saka to the north, cape Agulhas/cape of good hope to the south,Cape Verde to the west, and cape ras hafun/gudufui to the east
  • Africa's location:
    • Africa lies within the Tropic of Cancer to the north and the Tropic of Capricorn to the south
  • Africa's major bodies of water:
    • Africa is bordered by the Mediterian Sea to the north, red sea to the north east, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the Indian Ocean to the east
  • Africa's geographical division:
    • Africa is divided by the equator into almost two halves
    • the prime meridian crosses the continent in the western region
  • Social studies involve the study of human origin and their interrelations, environment, systems of government , and economic activities
  • Branches of social studies include Geography, history, and citizenship
  • Career opportunities in social studies can include Geology, (its the study of the physical structure of the earth ), cartography (the field of study that involves representring a given geographical area on a map),meseology (the study of building with objects of historical cultural of suentific significance)and urban planning (the planning strategies for the growth of towns and cities)
  • Africa is located between latitudes 37ºN and 35°S and longitudes 25°W and 58°E,latitude ,dividing the continent into almost two halves
  • Africa is the second largest continent in the world after Asia, with a total area of approximately 30,370,000 km²
  • Major latitudes and longitudes:latitudes are imaginary lines that run from East to West. Longitudes are imaginary lines that run from North Pole to south pole
  • prime meridian is the major longitude that is marked ,this is also known as green which meridian. in Africa it passes through the lawn of Accra in Ghana. These are three major lines of latitude passing through Africa, these are Equator, tropical of cancer, tropical of capricorn. Equator passing through Somalia,Kenya,Uganda,Congo,D.R.C,Gabon, Tropic of Cancer lies at 23 1/2 North of equator it passes through western Sahara, mustania,Mali,Algeria,Libya,Egypt, and the Tropic of Capricorn lies at 23 1/2 South of equator passing through Namibia, Biswana, South Africa, Mozambique, and Madagascar.
  • Longitude:
    • longitudes from west to east:-add degrees, add time(if asked to the east), substract time (if asked to the west)
    • Effects of rotation: differences in time using different longitudes.
    • Formula: 1° = 4 minutes
  • Rotation of the Earth is the spinning on its axis, and the imaginary lines of longitude and latitude are used to locate places and determine time
