    • Long term memory is anything that lasts longer than the duration of STM
    • Capacity of LTM has no limit
    • Bahrick et al. (1975) found that memories can be accurate for a very long period of time
    • Baddeley (1966) found that participants had difficulty remembering similar sounding words when tested immediately, but after 20 minutes had greater difficulty remembering words of same meaning
    • LTM mainly codes semantically
    • Potentially the permanent memory store for information that has been rehearsed for a prolonged time
    • Psychologists believe that its capacity is unlimited and can last many years
    • Bahrick found that participants were able to recall names and faces 50 years after graduating
    • LTMs tend to be coded semantically
    • Although this material is stored in LTM, when we want to recall it, it has to be transferred back into STM by a process called retrieval
    • According to MSM everything has to be retrieved nothing is recalled directly from LTM
