Evaluation Multi-Store Model

Cards (5)

  • A strength of the MSM is supporting evidence from case studies, HM was completely unable to transfer new information into LTM after the hippocampus was removed, yet could remember info from before the accident, which supports the idea of LTM being a separate memory system
  • Another strength of the MSM is that it can explain how we forget things over time, as STM has limited capacity so if not rehearsed or transferred to LTM then forgotten
  • A strength is supporting evidence from medical conditions, people with Alzheimer's disease suffer a loss of STM, and they may not remember what day of the week it is, but they can remember the details of childhood (LTM)
  • A weakness is that elaborative rehearsal isn't needed to transfer information from STM to LTM, for example episodic memory is not always rehearsed for example things like birthdays, therefore the model is wrong to think all types of memory have to be elaboratively rehearsed
  • Another weakness is contradictory evidence suggesting that LTM isn't a single store but at least three stores, for example, brain scans show that there are 3 different types of LTM. Procedural memory is in the motor cortex, semantic is in the temporal lobe and episodic is in the hippocampus
