types of LTM

Cards (7)

  • what is episodic memory ?
These are recalled events from our life. They are time stamped and include several elements. We need to make a conscious effort to remember them
  • what is semantic memory ?
This is our shared knowledge of the world. These are not time stamped and less personal. They are less vulnerable to distortion and forgetting
  • what is procedural memory ?
These are actions and skills. They can be recalled without conscious awareness.
  • what clinical evidence is there for the types of LTM?
HM suffered brain damage and his episodic memory was ruined. However his semantics were unaffected. He couldn’t recall stroking a dog half an hour before but didn’t need the concept explained to him. This shows that there are different types of stores
  • what is a weakness of the types of LTM?
There is a lack of control variables. These brain injuries are unexpected and we have no information about how the brain was before. Therefore it is difficult to judge.
  • why is there issues where different LTM is located ?
Buckner and Petersen did research on the location of episodic and semantic memory. They said semantic memory was located to the left of the prefrontal cortex and episodic to the right but there is research saying it is the other way around
  • where is real application in the types of LTM?
As we grow older we experience memory loss but now it is shown that it is episodic memory that has been affected. Belleville had devised an intervention to help improve episodic memory. This shows that it help to develop treatments.
