  • Social Change - changes in political or economic context of societies which affect the vast majority of the population; a significant change in social behavior or in social system within a particular society; changes in human interactions and relationships that transform cultural and social institutions
  • Evolutionary Change - changes that occur in a society in a long period of time, slowly and gradually through a process
  • Revolutionary Change - changes in a society that occur suddenly and drastically
  • The Reformation - a religious revolution that occurred in the Western church during the 16th century; also called Protestant Reformation; led to a decline in the power of a centralized church authority; had far-reaching, political, economic, and social effects on society
  • The Industrial Revolution - a period of significant social and economic change marked by the widespread development of new technologies, transportation and communication systems, and the growth of factories and mass production; led to a shift from an agrarian-based economy to an industrialized one
  • The Abolition of Slavery - slavery ended in 1855 when the 13th Amendment was adopted as a part of the United States Constitution; led to a world transformed for African Americans, granting rights that previously did not exist
  • The Civil Rights Movement - originated in the American South and used nonviolent direct action to confront Jim Crow laws and to force the federal government to demolish the system of racial segregation and inequality (1954 - 1968)
  • The Feminist Movement - promotes the idea that women, men, boys, and girls are equal regarding culture, politics, and economics
  • The LGBTQ+ Rights Movement - movement for equal rights for all human beings despite sexual orientation and gender identity achieved massive change in social perceptions in the 2000s
  • Cultural Change - used by sociologists and in public policy to denote the way society is changed
  • Innovation (Technology) - successful conversion of new concepts and knowledge into new products, services or processes
  • Diffusion (Cultural) - process by which aspects of one culture/subculture are incorporated into another culture
  • Acculturation (Culture) - adoption by one culture of features from another often as a result of colonization
