Waves

Cards (23)

  • Vibrations - The repetitive motion, it causes wave motion.
  • Waves is a vibration in space and time. It is a periodic disturbance that moves away from a source and carries energy with it.
  • Transverse waves are waves where the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of travel.
  • Longitudinal waves are waves where the oscillations are parallel to the direction of travel.
  • The speed of a transverse wave depends on its wavelength and frequency.
  • Frequency = Number of complete cycles passing through a point in one second
  • Amplitude = Maximum displacement from equilibrium position
  • Period = Time taken for one cycle to be completed
  • Crest = highest point of a wave
  • Trough = lowest point of a wave
  • Wavelength = refers to the distance between any successive identical parts of a wave.
  • Mechanical Waves = Is not capable of transmitting energy through a vacuum.
  • Electromagnetic Waves = is the type of wave that can transmit energy even without any material medium. It can also carry energy through space.
  • Electromagnetic Spectrum = it shows the various types of electromagnetic waves. It is the complete spectrum of all forms of "light".
  • Radio Wave = used by radio stations, TV channels, cell phones, and wireless internet connections.
  • Infrared Radiation (IR) = used for heating objects, remote controls, night vision goggles, and thermal imaging cameras.
  • Microwave = used for cooking food, satellite communication, radar systems, and microwave ovens.
  • Ultraviolet Rays (UV) = causes sunburn and skin cancer. Used as sterilization equipment and tanning beds.
  • Visible Light = is what we see with our eyes. The colors are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
  • Visible Light = is what we see with our eyes. The colors are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
  • Visible Light = used for light bulbs, lasers, fiber optics, and photography.
  • X-rays = used for medical diagnosis and treatment. They have high penetrating power but low ionizing ability.
  • Gamma rays = used for medical treatment and radiation therapy. Can cause serious damage to living tissue.
