Atmospheric Circulation

Cards (10)

  • What happens when the air rises?
The pressure of the air becomes low
  • What happens when the air sinks?
The pressure of the air becomes high
  • What weather do you experience during low pressure?
    Rainfall
  • What weather do you experience during high pressure?
    heat and hot sun
  • Where do you find the Hadley cells?
    On the equator
  • How is the Hadley cells formed?
The ground is heated by the sun. The air rises which causes low pressure . Then it condenses and sinks at 30 degrees north and south creating an area of high pressure.
  • Where do you find the ferrel cells?
    In the higher latitudes
  • How do ferrel cells form?
Air is pulled towards the poles. This forms warm winds at the hemispheres. Then the wind picks up moisture as they travel over the oceans.
  • What is the climate of the uk?
Temperate climate because the it gets warm in the summers and cold in the winters.
  • Describe the relationship between air pressure and surface winds.
Sinking air causes high pressure which leads to the winds moving away from each other.
