Cards (5)

  • What is the point of fracking?
To increase energy security by extracting natural gas from shale rock
  • Describe the process of fracking.
    > A mixture of sand and chemicals are pumped into shale rock at high pressures. Causes rock to crack releasing gas which is collected.
  • What happened to fracking in the UK?
    > The extraction of fracking in the UK was stopped in 2019 as it was deemed too unsafe for nearby residents
  • What were the advantages of fracking?
    > Cleanest fossil fuel (45% less co2 emissions than coal)
    > Less risk of environmental accidents
    > Lots of natural gas available
  • What are the disadvantages of fracking?
    > Can cause earth tremors- mini-earthquakes (2.9 R Blackpool 2019)
    > Pipelines expensive to build and maintain
    > Contribute to global warming through co2 and methane released
    > chemicals may contaminate nearby water sources
