  • Holistic development refers to the improvement and enhancement of an individual’s totality as a person by considering different aspects of a person
  • Intellectual/Cognitive Development:
    • Intelligence is the single factor that enables problem-solving and doing well in areas of cognition (Spearman, 1927)
    • Includes knowledge and skills measured by tests and vocabulary (Cattell, 1963)
    • Defined as the global capacity to think rationally, involves problem-solving and adaptation to one’s society (Stenberg, 2004)
  • Psychosocial Development:
    • Development from infancy to adulthood
    • During each stage, the person experiences a psychosocial crisis which could have a positive or negative outcome for personality development
    • Emphasizes the influence of society on developing an individual
  • Physical Development:
    • Involves developing control over the body, particularly muscles and physical coordination
    • Includes growth (increase in size, height, and weight) and development (gaining control over physical actions)
  • Types of Physical Development:
    • Fine Motor Skills: development and control of smaller muscles of the hands, fingers, and feet
    • Gross Motor Skills: development and control of the whole body and the larger muscles
  • Moral Development:
    • Process through which children develop proper attitudes and behaviors towards other people in society, based on social and cultural rules and laws
    • Includes aspects like morality (distinguishing right from wrong) and values (guiding human behavior)
  • Values in Moral Development:
    • Loyalty: faithfulness to duties
    • Sincerity: truthfulness to promises and transparency to thoughts
    • Kindness: gentleness in treating others
    • Compassion: concern for the sufferings of others
    • Courage: bravery in difficulties
    • Perseverance: persistence in attaining life goals
    • Optimism: confidence about the future
    • Respect: deep admiration for abilities, qualities, or achievements
    • Volunteerism: initiative to extend help to those in need
    • Integrity: honesty and strong moral principles
  • Physiological Development:
    • Involves the development of cognitive, emotional, intellectual, and social capabilities and functioning over the lifespan, from infancy through old age
  • Spiritual Development:
    • Is the development of the personality towards religious beliefs and practices
