Magnetism

Cards (13)

  • Magnetism: Ability of a material to attract iron, steel, and alloys.
  • Magnetic Property: due to moving charges. A stationary charge does not exhibit a magnetic property
  • Magnetism is classified into 3; ferromagnetic, diamagnetic, and paramagnetic
  • Ferromagnetic Materials: very strong magnetic properties since they mostly made up of atoms.
  • Diamagnetic Materials: have magnetic properties that are weaker than ferromagnets but stronger than paramagnets
  • Paramagnetic materials: have the weakest magnetic properties
  • Magnetic field: region of space around a moving charge or ]around magnetic material that is brought near to it.
  • Magnetic field lines: use to visualize this magnetic field and its interaction with magnetic materials
  • A north magnetic pole (positive) is represented by magnetic lines that are pointing away from the pole
  • South magnetic pole (negative): magnetic lines that are pointing toward the pole
  • magnetic field lines that are close to each other signify strong magnetic field while far apart lines signify weak magnetic field
  • SI unit for magnetic field is: tesla (T)
  • Magnetic field strength is the strongest at the poles of the magnets
