Cards (5)

  • INORGANIC IONS:
    • ion has electrical charge
    • ion with positive charge: cation
    • ion with negative charge: anion
    • inorganic ion does not contain carbon
    • inorganic ions are in solution, in cytoplasm and body fluid
    • each ion has specific role, depend on properties
    • ion role determine whether found in high or low concs
  • IRON IONS:
    • in haemoglobin
    • haemoglobin: carry O2 around body in red blood cells
    • made of four polypeptide chains, each has Fe2+ in center
    • Fe2+ binds to oxygen in haemoglobin
    • when O2 bound to Fe2+ ion temporarily becomes Fe3+ until O2 released
  • Hydrogen ions:
    • determines pH
    • pH calculated based on conc of H+ in environment
    • more H+ = lower pH
    • enzyme controlled reaction affected by pH
  • sodium ions
    • help transport C6H12O6 and Amino Acids across cell membrane
    • glucose/ amino acid can be transported into cell with Na+: co-transport
  • Phosphate ions
    • when attached to another molecule is know as phosphate group
    • DNA, RNA, ATP has phosphate
    • bond between phosphate group store energy in ATP
    • phosphate group in DNA an RNA allow nucleotide to join and form polynucleotides
