If something is more dense than water, it will sink in water.
If something is less dense than water, it will float in water.
density = mass/volume
Calculating the volume of a regular block of material, we can use the formula: Volume = length x width x height.
Calculating the volume of an irregular shape, we work out the volume using the displacement method. The object placed into a measuring cylinder of water, the increase in volume of water = volume of the object.
When liquids are added together, the less dense liquids will float on the more dense liquids. The liquids that do not mix will form separate layers.
Gases are less dense that liquids because the particles in a gas are much further apart than in liquid.
