density

Cards (7)

  • If something is more dense than water, it will sink in water.
  • If something is less dense than water, it will float in water.
  • density = mass/volume
  • Calculating the volume of a regular block of material, we can use the formula: Volume = length x width x height.
  • Calculating the volume of an irregular shape, we work out the volume using the displacement method. The object placed into a measuring cylinder of water, the increase in volume of water = volume of the object.
  • When liquids are added together, the less dense liquids will float on the more dense liquids. The liquids that do not mix will form separate layers.
  • Gases are less dense that liquids because the particles in a gas are much further apart than in liquid.
