  • Structural – This is the outer shape of a garment and the inner lines that create the design. Ex. Pleats and darts
  • Diagonal lines assume the characteristics of the vertical or horizontal line as the degree of slant, and this determines the illusion created.
Zigzag lines are two diagonal lines going on in opposite directions or series of connected diagonal lines that create an illusion of action and excitement.
A line that makes sharp turns at regular intervals creating z shapes. This line is very prominent and can create an illusion of bigness. It can also create a sense of urgency or confusion if the use of these lines is not restrained to moderation.
  • Curved lines follow the contour of the body and are flattering
Restrained curve line is graceful, flowing, cheerful or perky, gentle, and bouncy
  • Shape or form is composed of basic lines and the geometrical aspect of an object. When lines are combined, they form round, square, oblong, rectangle, and triangle shapes.

  • the quality of the fabric is dependent on the type of fiber, its inherent characteristics, its thickness, the number of twists, the fabric construction, and the finish applied. Fibers can be natural such as cotton, linen, wool and silk, or man-made (synthetic) such as rayon, nylon, and terelyne.
  • Woven fabrics – made through the interlacing of two sets of yarns
Knitted fabrics – made with yarns looped together
Felted fabrics – generally made of wool.
  • Cotton - inelastic, soils easily, wrinkles easily and is strong when wet. It is suited for summer because it is light and absorbent.
  • Silk – fairly warm, easy to care, resists wrinkles, and is the strongest of the natural fibers.
  • Synthetic fabrics (e.g rayon, acetate, nylon) – are suitable for the monsoon season because these generally have low absorption and do not go limp on damp weather. They dry very quickly.
  • Value – the lightness or darkness of a color, such as light and dark blue
  • Intensity – the dullness or brightness of a color, such as peach is orange and gray is royal blue
  • Decorative or applied – This is the design added to the surface of a structural design like prints on a fabric. Ex. Embroidery and Print
  • Vertical lines carry the eye up and down and give an impression of height, formality, and stability. They make short people appear tall.
  • Horizontal lines, on the other hand, carry the eye from side to side and give an impression of width, serenity, and relaxation
