Xylem vessels

Cards (4)

  • Xylem transports water and minerals from the roots, through the stem and to the leaves. It is made of dead cellsplaced end-to-end, forming continuous and hollow vessels
  • The walls of the xylem are coated with lignin, which makes them very strong and prevents them from collapsing.
  • Water is absorbed in the roots and transported through xylem vessels to the leaves for photosynthesis
  • Water also fills the plants' cells (in the cytoplasm) which keeps the plant cells turgid and the plant upright
