Explain 2 weaknesses of conducting research on-line

Cards (2)

  • Weakness 1
One weakness of conducting research online is that ethical issues, such as informed consent and protection from harm, are harder to manage. Participants often give consent by ticking a box, but this may not indicate full understanding of what the research involves. This raises concerns about whether consent is truly valid. Additionally, if a participant becomes distressed, the researcher may not be aware or able to intervene, reducing the protection from psychological harm.
  • Weakness 2
Another weakness is that the research methods available online are limited, which may reduce the validity of the findings. Most online studies rely on surveys or questionnaires, which can be affected by social desirability bias or misinterpretations of questions. Experimental control is also reduced online, making it harder to manage extraneous variables. This lack of control may compromise the internal validity of the research.
