Organic chemistry

Cards (8)

  • Crude oil - is found in rocks and is a finite resource ( if we keep using it shall run out)
  • Hydrocarbons - are molecules made up of hydrogen and carbon atoms only
  • Most hydrocarbons include oil are called alkenes
  • First four alkenes
    • methane
    • ethane
    • propane
    • butane
  • Properties of hydrocarbons
viscosity - As the size of hydrocarbons molecules increase the molecules get more viscous
Flammability - short chains of hydrocarbons are extremely flammable
Boiling point - As hydrocarbon molecules increase the boiling point increases
  • Cracking – in cracking a long chain alkane is broken down to produce smaller, more useful molecules
  • conditions of cracking
    • Catalytic cracking which uses a high temperature & catalyst
    • Steam cracking, which uses a high temperature & steam
  • Test for alkenes
Using bromine water, once you have shaked your alkene with bromine, it turns colourless
