  • Cassa per il Mezzogiorno spent €2.5 billion under the Vanoni plan on improving the transport network. Most funding was used to develop the motorway system.
  • Autostrada del Sole was built.
  • Autostrada del Sole connects the toe of Italy with Milan at 1,000 km long it is the longest motorway in Italy.
  • Bridges had to be built over deep valleys and tunnels blasted through mountains.
  • Roads were widened to accommodate large trucks etc. This motorway acts as an important link between north and south and has reduced transport costs and times and has reduced the peripheral location of Mezzogiorno.

  • Deep water ports were constructed at Taranto and Brindisi. This has encouraged industrial development in the area.
  • In Sicily a deep water port was constructed at Siracusa, this is used for importing oil for the oil refining industry.
  • A new container port Gioia Tauro in Calabria was constructed in 1995, employing more than 1,000 people. This is the second largest container port in the Mediterranean.
