  • what is a limitation for harlow?
Monkeys are more similar to humans than birds so we share common attachment behaviours but humans are more complex May not be appropriate
  • what is strength of harlow?
Helped social workers and clinical psychologists realise the outcomes of lack of bonding allowing them to intervene and prevent poor outcomesUseful in breeding and in zoos
  • what is a limitation for lorenz?
Attachment system is different in animals and humans as in mammalians it is a two way process Cannot be generalised from birds to humans
  • what support is there for lorenz?
Regolin and vallortigara replicated  Lorenz’s study with chicks and shapes. They followed the original shape the most -imprinting
  • what was harlow's study?
    •  reared 16 baby monkeys to 2 wire model mothers
    • One had a cloth
    • When frightened the monkeys were more likely to go to the cloth mother regardless of which one dispensed milk
    • Contact comfort was more important than food
    • Monkeys who had maternal deprivation did not develop properly and neglected their own children
    • A mother figure had to be introduced to a mother figure within 90 days , if not they would not form any attachments
  • what was lorenz's study?
    • Lorenz divided a goose egg clutch half in an incubator and the first moving thing they saw was Lorenz and half with its mother
    • The incubator group followed Lorenz everywhere
    • This is called imprinting where animals attach themselves and follow the first object they see
    • There is a critical period in where the species need to form an attachment
    • Sexual imprinting
