  • Vesalius performed dissections on executed criminals as he thought doctors needed a proper understanding of human anatomy. He wrote two books: 'Six Anatomical Pictures' (1538) and 'The Fabric of the Human Body' (1843).
  • Vesalius showed the importance of dissection and encouraged others to challenge Galen's ideas.
  • Thomas Sydenham made detailed observations and accurate records of patients and their symptoms. Believed practical experience was better than theoretical knowledge. He realised diseases could be classified into groups and introduced new treatments. Wrote 'Medical observations' (1676).
  • Sydenham showed the significance of diagnosis and his records helped others diagnose patients. His ideas were used to train doctors for over 200 years.
