Scrooge is starting to change but he wants to hide it.
Scrooge doesn't like himself as a person and wishes to be Belle's husband and he can't bear the pain because he's unhappy.

"unbroken flood" - pervasive, destructive - Scrooge'shardexterior is finally starting to break down whether he likes it or not. He is being destroyed by the light.
Scrooge can't escape the light it is eventually going to happen.
