Solving rational equations

Cards (3)

  • Extraneous solution: a possible solution that results from the process of solving, it will solve it but not satisfy the original equation
  • When solving rational equations:
    • Eliminate the denominator
    • Be cautious of extraneous solutions that may arise during the process of solving
  • Example of solving a rational equation:
    x + 2 / x + 2 = 3
    • Multiply all terms by the denominator (x + 2)
    • Simplify the equation to find the solution
