  • Solids are rigid, compact, and incompressible. They have a fixed shape and volume. Does not flow
  • Liquids have definite volume but no definite shape. Flows and diffuses slowly. and are nearly compressible
  • Viscosity is defined as the resistance of a liquid to flow
  • all matter is made up of particles
  • properties of gases: have no definite shape and volume. slow and diffuse easily. are compressible. exert pressure
  • Examples of Amorphus Solids: charcoal and rubb
  • Plasma - electrified gas
  • Plasma - readily conducts electricity. absorbs some types of radiation that would pass unaffected through a gas and responds to electric and magnetic forces
  • Structure of the Atom
  •  There is a strong force holding solid particles together.  Solid particles only vibrate at fixed positions.
  • The most common form of matter in the universe is plasma.  The stars in our galaxy and other galaxies are made up of plasma.
  • Sublimation is a process where solid changes directly to gas without passing through the liquid state. The reverse reaction of sublimation is deposition.
  • Leucippus & Democritus - Atom: a minute particle that could not be subdivided
  • Robert Boyle - Definition of ‘element’
  • John Dalton - Atom: indestructible sphere with a mass
  • Jons Jakob Berzelius - Mass of oxygen as a standard
  • J. J. Thomson - Electrons
  • Ernest Rutherford - Gold foil experiment
  • James Chadwick - neutron
  • J.J. Thompson - plum pudding model
  • max planck - quanta
  • Ernest Rutherford - Nucleus
  • Plucker, Hittorf, Crookes - Cathode rays
  • Döbereiner attempted to classify the existing elements into groups of three with  related properties. He called these groups triads
  • Lothan Meyer was working on a periodic table included only 28   elements.
  • The modern periodic table of the elements contains 18 groups, or  vertical columns.
  • John A. R. Newlands classified 56 discovered elements into 11 groups based on similar physical properties.
  • The elements Na and Cl combine to form salt.
  • The periodic table consists of 7 periods.
  • Mendeleev’s periodic table did not include a space for noble gases
  • Another name for an unstable isotope is a Radioisotope
  • In the periodic table, the first period is the period with the least number of   elements.
  • Aluminum (Al) is NOT the only true metal in Group IVA.
