Effect of osmosis on Plant tissues

Cards (4)

  • What do you need to investigate the effects of osmosis on plant tissues ?
    • potato
    • cork borer (to cut cylinder in the potato )
    • a scalpel (to cut the cylinder to the same length)
  • What do you do to investigate the effects of osmosis on a plant tissue ?
    • first you use the cor borer to cut out three cylinders in the potato
    • then you use the scalpel to cut them all to the same length
    • measure the cylinders using a ruler and the mass of each cylinder using a balance
    • now you place each cylinder in to a test tube
    • add 10cm^3 of a o.r molar sugar solution in the first test tube
    • add 10cm^3 of 0.25 molar of sugar solution to the second test tube
    • add 10cm^3 of distilled water to the third test tube
  • What do you do after putting the cylinders into the test tubes ?
    • leave them overnight for osmosis to take place
    • remove them from the test tubes and gently roll them onto towel to remove surface moisture
    • measure the length and mass of the cylinders again
  • What is the equation for the percentage change in length and mass ?
% change = change in value divided by original value x 100
