Newton's Third Law of Motion

Cards (2)

  • Newton's Third Law
For every action force, there is a reaction force of equal magnitude in the opposite direction
  • To illustrate the third law, we use a gun. When gunpowder is ignited, the gas expands rapidly and pushes the bullet out. We call this the action force. At the same instant, the gas pushes back on the rifle. We call this the reaction force. The action and reaction force are equal in size, but in opposite directions and act on different objects. Since the rifle has more mass than the bullet, it accelerates slower.
