Eden Basin

  North-West England.

  The river Eden flows through Cumbria and the city of Carlisle.
• What are the Farming Characteristics

  •More intense farming causes more compacted soils

  •This decreases infiltration and increase surface run off

  •Cattle (30% increase 2000-2009) and heavy machinery cause this
• What are the Urbanisation Characteristics

  •New homes and roads

  •More impermeable surfaces, increases surface run off which then reduces lag time
• What are the deforestation characteristics ?

  Trees reduce surface run off

  This is through interception by leave and the increase of infiltration from roots.
• What Storm caused sever flooding and what were a few impacts?

  Storm Desmond in 2015

  Over 2000 homes flooded in Carlisle

  50mm of rainfall more then the average for the whole off December
• What makes the Eden Basin have such unique characteristics affecting lag time?(the relief and topography)

  The basin is long and therefore increases lag time.

  However, slopes are steep and and narrow which reduces the lag time and results in more likely flash flooding.
