The 2022 Philippine National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) is a nationally representative survey providing information on the population, health, and nutrition of the Philippines
The survey is conducted every five years by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and was conducted from November 2021 to January 2022
Data collected in the 2022 NDHS includes topics such as fertility, mortality, family planning, child health, nutrition, and women's health
Funding for the 2022 NDHS was provided by the Government of the Philippines, with technical assistance from The DHS Program funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
USAID is an independent agency of the United States federal government established in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, providing economic and humanitarian assistance to developing countries
USAID's mission is to "partner with people and governments around the world to promote a more peaceful, just, and prosperous world" in areas such as health, education, economic growth, and agriculture
The 2022 NDHS was implemented by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) with technical assistance from The DHS Program funded by USAID
The contents of the 2022 NDHS report are the responsibility of the PSA and ICF and do not necessarily reflect the views of USAID, the United States Government, or other donor agencies
Key findings also cover areas such as care seeking and treatment of child illness, infant and young child feeding, early childhood development, and HIV

Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) is a topic covered in the survey
The survey also includes information on early childhood development, HIV, violence against women, and intimate partner violence
Tables and figures in the survey report cover various topics such as household drinking water, sanitation facilities, PhilHealth coverage, COVID-19 transmission, child discipline, fertility preferences, and maternal care indicators
The 2022 NDHS collected data on fertility, mortality, family planning, child health, nutrition, and women's health in the Philippines
Some abbreviations related to the NDHS include:
LAM: lactational amenorrhea method
MICS: Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey
MMR: measles, mumps, rubella
MSF: Master Sample Frame
The survey aims to assist policymakers and program managers in designing and evaluating programs and strategies for improving the health of the Philippine population
The NDHS also provides indicators aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the new Philippine Development Plan for 2023 to 2028
The sample selection methodology for the 2022 NDHS was based on a two-stage stratified sample design using the Master Sample Frame (MSF) compiled by the PSA
The Master Sample Frame (MSF) for the NDHS was designed and compiled by the PSA, based on the listing of households from the 2010 and 2015 Censuses of Population
The MSF involved a systematic selection of 1,247 primary sampling units (PSUs) distributed by province or HUC, with an equal take of sample housing units selected from each PSU using systematic random sampling
All women aged 15–49 who were either usual residents of selected households or visitors who stayed the night before the survey were eligible to be interviewed
Two questionnaires were used for the 2022 NDHS: the Household Questionnaire and the Woman’s Questionnaire, which collected information on various topics including sociodemographic characteristics, reproduction, family planning, and health issues
The Household Questionnaire collected basic demographic information for each person listed, health insurance coverage, characteristics of the household’s housing unit, and specific sections on health facility utilization, knowledge of local health programs, and diseases
The Woman’s Questionnaire collected information on reproduction, family planning, maternal and newborn health care, vaccination, children’s nutrition, women’s safety, and other health issues
The NDHS used tablet computers for data collection through computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI), with questionnaires translated into six major languages for flexibility
Prior to finalizing survey materials, a pretest briefing was held to discuss survey concepts, field enumeration, and specific instructions for completing questionnaires
Training of field staff for the NDHS was conducted on two levels: training of the Task Force and training of interviewing teams in the Task Force trainers’ respective regions
The second level of training for the NDHS took place from April 4 to 26, 2022, in 17 training centers selected by the RSSOs
Trainers in the second-level training were participants in the Task Force training, and the instructors were the 17 regional supervisors and 17 regional IT specialists from each of the 17 regions
A total of 305 field interviewers and 110 team supervisors were recruited from each of the respective regions to take part in the second-level training
Fieldwork for the 2022 NDHS was carried out from May 2 to June 22, 2022, by 110 field teams, each consisting of a team supervisor and two to three field interviewers, all female
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, guidelines were developed to mitigate potential risks of infection for field teams and survey respondents during data collection, monitoring, and supervision
Processing of the 2022 NDHS data began almost as soon as fieldwork started, with data files transferred to the PSA Central Office in Quezon City for registration and checking for inconsistencies, incompleteness, and outliers
Secondary editing of the data involved resolving inconsistencies and recoding "other" responses, with data editing performed using the CSPro software package
The final cleaning of the data set was carried out by data processing specialists from The DHS Program in September 2022
Throughout the report, numbers in the tables reflect weighted numbers, with percentages based on fewer than 25 unweighted cases suppressed and replaced with an asterisk
