    early 1926 - clear that the the local power of the Gauleiters was creating a divide in Nazi Party - Northern = socialist, southern = capitalist
  • Hitlers solution
    Hitler called for a national conference of the Nazi party in Bamberg (this meant more southern leaders could come)
    • Northern leaders - Strasser - put their socialist ideas across first
    • Hitler made his view very clear by speaking for 5 hours - he said socialists were like communists
    • Hitler worked hard to keep Goebbels over to his side - as a result Goebbels abandoned Strasser
  • significance
    • Hitlers control was made clear
    • Goebbels promoted to Gauleiter of Berlin
    • Strasser pledged loyalty but was never trusted by Hitler - he got murdered in 1934
    • the socialist principles of the Nazi party was weakened
  • despite this - Nazi's only had limited support
    • economy stability - Dawes and Young Pacts
    • people were happy with the moderates views
    • Germany's international status increased
    • Hindenburg - War hero was appointed President - this increased support for the Republic
    • people felt less likely to vote for a nationalist party
  • therefore the Nazi's had no support from the working class - they only had 12 seats (2.6%) in the 1928 elections
