• BAPTISM - the sacrament that brings about rebirth and initiates us into the Church, the Body of Christ.
• BAPTIZEIN - meaning to “plunge” or “immerse.”
• INFANT BAPTISM

  • born with a fallen human nature and tainted by original sin, infants, too, need to be baptized to be freed from the power of darkness
  • Having the child baptized as an infant is a sign of the love of the parent for the child.

• Water - Represents cleansing. It also symbolizes death to an old life of sin and rebirth into a new life with Christ Jesus.

  POVERTY – means by which religious find their sole treasure in Christ and in the things of God.

  CHASTITY – a divine gift to make one’s own the pure love of Christ.

  OBEDIENCE – follows and participates in the loving obedience of Christ.

  • a DIOCESAN PRIEST is assigned to a parish by the bishop
  • RELIGIOUS PRIEST - their lives are oriented in a special way to the virtue of religion so that all they do becomes a continual act of the worship to God.
• LEVELS OF ORDINATION

  • DEACONS - Greek word diakoneo is usually translated as “serve”.
  • The word is taken from presbyteros where the word sacerdos is taken. The PRIEST is a minister of a Divine worship and sacrifice.
  • The BISHOP is the Superior of all the priests in his dioceses
• LAST RITES - Christian priest for a dying person.
• MARRIAGE - holy sacrament, officiated by a priest, of uniting a man to a woman.
• PENANCE – Reconciliation aka Penance
• ABSOLUTION - declaration of forgiveness of sins.
• SHELL - Reminder that Jesus baptized in the river
• Personal Sin - the willful disobedience to God's will.
• HOLY CHRISM – Oil used in this sacrament.

• CONFIRMATION - sacrament that enhances and deepens the grace bestowed during baptism.

• White Garment - The white garment that is placed upon us at baptism is a symbol of Christ’s victory over death and his glorious resurrection. The newly baptized are dressed in a white garment after baptism to symbolize that they are washed clean of sin.
• The Baptismal Candle - A small candle is lit from the Easter candle and given to the newly baptized as a reminder to them always to walk as children of the Light and to be the light of Christ to the world.

  • BONUM PROLIS (GOOD OF OFFSPRING) - openness to having children
• CONDITIONS FOR A VALID MARRIAGE

  • The spouses are free to marry.
  • They freely exchange their consent.
  • They have the intention to marry for life, to be faithful to one another and be open to children.
  • The consent of the couple is given in the presence of two witnesses and before a properly authorized Church minister.
