Caused by unregulated and abnormal cell growth leading to tumours. When these cells spread it disrupts normal functioning of the body
Caused by many different factors including: infectious agents, genetics, lifestyle choices and environmental factors
Genes play an important role in regulating normal cell division and DNA repair. Mutations in these genes can disrupt this normal regulation leading to cancer
Dna repair genes– code for proteins that either stop the cell cycle or remove damaged regions of dna and replace them with the correct sequence
Proto-oncogene– code for proteins that stimulate cell growth and mitosis
Tumour suppressor gene– code for proteins that slow down or stop cell growth and mitosis as well as instruct cell death if needed
