  • Consists of 2 circuits joined together
  • 1st circuit: pumps deoxygenated blood to lungs to take in oxygen and returns oxygenated blood to heart (into pulmonary vein)
  • 2nd circuit: pumps oxygenated blood around all other organs and returns deoxygenated blood to heart (into vena cava)
• What is the benefit of having a double circulaory system?

  • returning blood to heart after its picked up oxygen means it can be pumped around the body at a much higher pressure
  • increases rate of blood flow to tissues so oxygen can be delivered to cells much faster
  • Important for humans as oxygen is used up very quickly for stuff like maintaining body temp and other processes (e.g. aerobic respiration)
